Very cool indeed, thanks for the suggestion. Since getting home from work I’ve checked out maybe twenty versions so far(DeadBase says they performed it 49 times) – most that I haven’t heard before – quite an awesome afternoon spent with Jerry. He really had a fine grasp of this song, vocally and instrumentally, that’s for sure.

If you have the inclination, let me and SCB know what you think of that 4-6-69 version! And the guy in the crowd yelling out what sounds distinctly like "I dont wanna die!".

It would be difficult to name one definitive version. Jerry just puts so much into it each time. Not sure of the proper musical terminology, but the great range of vocal inflection he works with – very poignant on 4/6/69 - really blow me away. Same applies to his guitar playing – unbelievable power and majesty. As for the guy in the crowd, if I had to take a guess, I’d say he was pleading, “I want love”, but it is hard to make out.

Yeah, depends when you listen to it as his voice comes thru differently, but a few of us did it in great detail and thought there is at least once when he says it...hard to be sure though. Amazing version though, eh? Guess you said that!

I love the 4/6 Avalon performance Guillaume, but after doing an A-B comparison with the Death Don't from 4/22, I find the Ark performance carries the same desperation but better instrumental execution...

I have that one in my rotation as well, CLIFF; will do some more comparisons at the gym when I am able...do agree that it has to be close though, as I had a friend that I sent the Ark shows to some time ago tell me it was the best, and I agreed (yr or two back), so I am confident in saying it is top five ish or what have you without having heard it in a long while.
